11 Ways to Feel Better in Your Home

On a recent inspiration-seeking Instagram scroll, I came across a quote that stopped me in my tracks.

It went like this:

“Your home is an extension of your energy field. This is why practices like cleaning your home, rearranging furniture, organizing your closet and getting rid of objects that are cluttering your space can have a profound impact on your own mind, body, and spirit.”

Setting my phone on the table beside me, I found myself in “before and after minimalism” reflection mode.

The anonymous words I’d just read held truth—especially for me as a highly sensitive person. Life before minimalism in a home filled with unused and unloved stuff felt weighed down. I couldn’t keep up with cleaning, dust piles multiplied overnight and I was pretty sure that, at any given time, something could be growing in our kids’ room.

In short, it wasn’t a home I felt good in. Beyond the mental strain of an ongoing, home-related to-do list was the simple vibe of the home. It wasn’t a positive one.

But why? I reflected.

Why does the state of our homes have the power to change how we feel?

I decided to dig deeper. I checked out the book Design a Healthy Home: 100 Ways to Transform Your Space for Physical and Mental Wellbeing and read about a study that reported people who have real wood floors in their homes have an 80% lower chance of experiencing depression.

Everything in our home, the book explained, holds energy. The various materials and items we bring into our home emit different frequencies. Lower frequency items/areas (think plastics, dusty spots, cluttered spaces) can bog down our personal energy and make us feel bad. Higher frequency items/areas (think natural materials, plants, clean areas, uncluttered spaces) can elevate our energy and make us feel good.

I was fascinated. Never before had I viewed our home from an energy perspective. I was on a mission to raise the frequencies surrounding us in our home. To create a living space that replenished and energized me.

I turned to home energetics expert Lindsay Struchen from Elevated Healing to find out how.

Here are 11 things you can do today to transform the energy of your home and feel better in your living space:

1. Ask yourself questions

Take a minute and honestly evaluate how you currently feel in your home. Is your living space a source of stress or serenity? What is the energy like in your home? Do certain areas deplete you while others leave you feeling replenished?

Struchen suggests asking yourself if your personal environment is supportive of you. Transformation begins by first raising your awareness of the energy in your home and how it affects you.

2. Set intentions

If the answer to, “Do I feel good in my home?” is no, then ask yourself what you want to feel in your home. Maybe you want to feel more peace, generosity, abundance or fun. By identifying your target feelings, you can make choices that support your intentions.

Once you know how you want to feel in your home, begin structuring your decisions around those intentions. Before bringing something into your home, ask yourself, “Does this align with what I said I wanted?” If you desire more peace in your life, for example, but regularly purchase plastic kid’s toys that are insidiously taking over your living space, it’s time to rethink your buying habits.

3. Declutter your home

Studies have shown that a cluttered living space can raise your cortisol levels and negatively affect your energy. A space with less clutter radiates more positive energy, boosting your mood and lowering your stress levels.

A clutter-free home doesn’t mean a perfect home (that would elevate stress levels in itself if perfection is the end goal). Get in the habit of asking if the items in your home are supporting your best life or detracting from it. If they aren’t supporting you and what you want out of life, let them go. (Read more here on how to declutter your home).

4. Keep your living space clean

Your home has a frequency to it and if the home is dirty the energy will be impacted. Imagine how you feel when you sit next to a dust covered nightstand compared to when you sit next to one that’s clean and adorned with fresh flowers. The feeling you get is radically different because the frequency of a dirty space is lower than a clean one.

Choose an area of your home that you spend a lot of time in, such as the kitchen or living room (or even just a corner of your home, like your nightstand). Commit to keeping this area clean and observe how you feel in the space.

(Personally, I wasn’t able to maintain a clean home until living minimally. Less stuff in a home means less to clean. If you’re not yet at a place where your home can feel clean, take heart, I’ve been there. Shame and wishing things were different are counterproductive. Instead, try taking 10 minutes a day to devote to cleaning a specific area. Small wins will elevate the energy in your home and motivate you to continue on your intentional living journey.)

5. Use smoke

To clear negative energy from a home, use smoke. Burning palo santo wood or dried sage drives toxic energy from your home. Just be sure to open your windows first.

Struchen recommends clearing your home’s energy weekly this way. (Read more on how to do this here).

6. Consider colors

Different colors contain different frequencies and affect the way we feel. Yellow is a high frequency color, representing abundance and joy, and even increases the release of serotonin in the brain.

Struchen suggests using accent colors around the home to match whatever intentions you’ve set for your living space and life. If more peace is your goal, use blues. If you want to welcome more love into your life, regularly place red roses in your home. Intentionally tapping into the frequencies of specific colors can help manifest our desired feelings.

7. Incorporate nature

Items from nature have higher frequencies than anything artificially made. Think of how you feel on a walk through the woods—the energy of the outdoors elevates our mood.

Struchen suggests bringing natural elements into our homes. On a smaller scale, this looks like buying a plant or fresh flowers. On a bigger scale this could mean redoing your floors with real wood or buying a wooden bed frame, which has been shown to improve sleep. (Read more about biophilic design here.)

8. Eliminate toxins

Toxins found in cleaning products, beauty products, water, air, and food bring negative energy to the home, making us feel worse.

Struchen suggests using chemical-free products (the Environment Working Group is a great resource to see how many chemicals are in your products). She recommends using a quality water filter and air filter. Buying organic produce and quality meats when possible helps you keep toxins out of your home and body (check the EWG’s website to see recommendations on what produce to buy organic).

9. Optimize Lighting

Natural light welcomes higher vibrations into the home. Open your shades and let the light in daily.

Cleaning your windows helps optimize lighting and can also facilitate clearer thinking. Elevating your home’s vibrations by cleaning windows helps eliminate foggy thinking and can even help you see things from another point of view.

10. Use essential oils

Diffusing essential oils is a powerful way to reset the energy of your home. For energy clearing and protection, Struchen recommends using tea tree oil or purify.

11. Add high vibration items

Before bringing an item into your home, begin considering if it is a low or high vibration item. Hold an item in your hand, tap into your intuition, and see how it makes you feel.

Bring live plants into your home instead of fake ones. Fresh flowers instead of artificial ones (which are known for collecting dust). Choose wooden or bamboo storage boxes instead of plastic bins. Opt for glass food containers instead of plastic.

Author Shani Jay said, “There’s a reason why decluttering your physical space feels so good. It declutters your mind, clears your energy field, and creates space for new and exciting things to come your way.”

The frequencies of our home environment matter. Energy in your home can influence how you feel and support the manifestation of your desires.

Begin thinking of your homes as an extension of your energy field. Is your living space supporting you? If not, it’s time to change that.

I encourage you to take one or two suggestions from above and try them out in your home.

Your home and life will feel lighter for it.

  1. Very interesting post Julia. I haven’t thought about some of that but I already do a lot of it. I can definitely tell the difference in how I feel when n a cluttered environment vs a tidy beautiful environment. That’s why I make simple spaces and living a priority in my life.
